Professor Mark Bellgrove
presenting Neurobiology of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Abstract: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent mental health disorder of childhood. It is associated with negative lifetime outcomes including increased morbidity and mortality rates. The heritability of ADHD is high and 20 years of genetic association studies have sought to unravel its genetic architecture. In this presentation I will review the neurobiology of ADHD including studies of genetics, pharmacology, brain imaging and neuropsychology.

Christine Layton presents one of ABC Radio Perth’s four flagship programs, statewide Afternoons. From Mornings at ABC Great Southern in Albany to broadcasting across the country on National Drive, Christine has spent the last decade interviewing every day Australians, high profile politicians, elite athletes and performers such as Dame Emma Thompson, Jimmy Barnes, Premier Mark McGowan and Cathy Freeman OAM.
When Christine was diagnosed with ADHD 10 years ago, she made a decision to pursue radio in the hope it was more suited to her skill set. As Afternoons Presenter, she now covers 8-12 stories over the course of her weekday three hour show whilst speaking to hundreds of talkback callers on a range of local and national topics. Christine enjoys the hard-timed nature of radio and the challenge of monitoring the 24-hour news cycle on 3 TVs whilst operating 6 studio screens and a live 12 fader panel on air.
At the start of the pandemic, Christine recognised the need for open conversations around mental health and created Australia’s first regular segment ‘Inside Out’ with Tash Broomhall from Blooming Minds (finalist at the WA Mental Health Awards 2019, 2020). An award-winning lindy hop performer and former teacher, Christine is a mother, wife and ambassador for Endometriosis Australia and The Bell Tower.

We examine what aspects of ADHD negatively impact on a relationship, and why.
We consider the impact of neurodiversity on each of the partners. How they begin to think, feel and behave when in a long term, committed relationship.
And finally, we look at what can be done, what changes can be made, in order for such couples to improve their relationship, and live a long a happy life together.

Professor Wai Chen
facilitating Understanding, preventing and managing Gaming Disorder (GD) and Problematic Digital Media Use in adolescents and youths with ADHD
Digital media (DM) use (internet, social media and gaming) are increasingly common especially in children and youths. Those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are particular prone to develop problematic use; and if severe, addiction, with ensuing behavioural problems, emotional distress, anxiety, depression, relationship problems and, in some, suicidality.
ICD-11 has introduced Gaming Disorder (GD) as a formal psychiatric diagnosis. Yet, problematic social media use and mobile phone use, and internet addiction are not formally included. This workshop provides an overview of these conditions, their negative impacts, and treatment implications, including prevention of these conditions.

Dr Michele Toner
facilitating Parenting ADHD: It’s a Marathon, not a Sprint!
Parenting a child with ADHD is not for the faint-hearted. On some days you will feel like SuperParent, ready to leap the tallest building of bureaucracy. On other days you will feel like a total failure. Your job requires research, organisation, mediation, advocacy, patience, energy and compassion. But do you remember to extend that compassion to yourself? The aim of Michele’s session is to persuade you as parents to practise self-care, and to pace yourselves. After all, you’re in it for the long run. The good news is – it gets better and easier the more you do it. All you need to do is choose your areas of focus and resist the urge to ‘fix’ everything at once. You will leave this session with a plan to care for yourself and run the ADHD Parenting Marathon.

facilitating The Power of ADHD Coaching for Teens
The teenage years are a time for increased responsibilities and independence. ADHD can make navigating these transitional times even more challenging. Teenagers can struggle with focusing on school, completing homework, impulsive or risky behaviour, difficulty with social relationships and managing big emotions.
Today we will explore how coaching teenagers can help them gain confidence in their problem-solving abilities and build life skills that will serve them post-secondary and into adult life. Coaching will help them understand and appreciate the strengths and challenges of their ADHD brain.

Over my 25-year teaching career, I have been fortunate to have taught numerous children, all with their unique traits Supporting and championing every student led me to train as an ADHD coach. My international, 15 years, and local teaching experience has allowed me to follow my love of learning and bring that to all the students I have been lucky enough to teach. Understanding how your brain works and the processes in which you learn is the first step to overcoming challenges and being who you truly are. The various ways in which students learn and think, is enlightening to me and was a stimulus for me to take on this new pathway and help students and families succeed.

As a passionate Educator with 29 years of experience in Independent schools, I have been advocating for neurodiverse students and families as they navigate the complex world of education. My strengths lie in my ability to connect with, understand the needs of and successfully implement tools to help students achieve social, emotional and academic success. I moved from being a classroom and specialist teacher, to being the Gifted and Talented Specialist. My leadership position afforded me the opportunity to advocate for students, mentor them in a case management capacity, and to support families and Educators alike. I found my work with these students and families inspirational; this was a community I knew I wanted to support. I look forward to working with people to help them understand their unique brain-wiring and to unleash their superpowers
