Prof Desiree Silva, Developmental Paediatrician
Prof Silva is going to focus on ADHD Facts and Myths. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common mental health condition in children and is present in most countries around the world. Although there is an abundance of literature on this condition with plenty of scientific information, this condition still remains controversial and often under-diagnosed. The talk is designed to provide you with the common myths and understand some of the science behind ADHD to enable you to better advocate for yourself or your child with ADHD.

Prof Wai Chen, Child Psychiatrist
Prof Chen is addressing 'ADHD, toxic stress and medication treatment'. The talk focuses on psychopharmacology and the medication treatment of ADHD. It explains why dose titration is essential in ADHD stimulant therapy, and why sometimes it is necessary to use combination therapy to address the full spectrum of symptoms. It also touches briefly on the topic of 'toxic stress' and why it is important to take actions to mitigate against the negative impacts of 'toxic stress' in relation to anxiety and depression.

Derek Cohen, Clinical Psychologist
Derek Cohen's topic for the conference is 'Diagnosis and Treatment in ADHD'. The diagnosis of ADHD may appear simple on the surface: is a child inattentive and/or hyperactive? However, it is never that basic, and it never should be. The diagnostic process involves separating the look-a-likes from the primary difficulties, which is referred to as a "differential diagnosis". A complete assessment will generally uncover learning difficulties, difficulties with relationships, and poor emotional regulation. The aim of any assessment is not to just label a child as ADHD, but to understand the child and their needs, and the development of a treatment plan to improve these areas.
In the talk, Derek is going to outline what a parent could expect in a diagnostic assessment and psychology-focused treatment.
